Traditional lime pointing on a Scottish stone wall
01 — Lime Pointing

Traditional Lime Pointing

Traditional stone buildings need to breathe. Hard cement pointing traps moisture and accelerates decay — we point with matched lime mortars that let walls dry naturally and protect the stone for generations. Joint profiles are matched to the original.

  • Natural hydraulic & hot-lime mortars
  • Removal of damaging cement pointing
  • Colour and profile matched to the original
  • Ideal for tenements, gable ends and garden walls
02 — Sandstone Repairs

Repairing Decayed & Damaged Stone

Where sandstone has eroded, cracked or spalled, we cut out the failed section and let in a matched natural stone "indent", or rebuild eroded detail with a breathable lime-based mortar repair. Every repair is colour- and texture-matched to blend seamlessly.

  • New sandstone indents cut and fitted by hand
  • Lime plastic repairs to eroded detail
  • Crack stitching and structural stabilisation
  • Geology-matched replacement stone sourced

03 — Stone Restoration & Replacement

Sympathetic Stone Restoration

We combine skilled craftsmanship with traditional techniques to preserve the beauty and integrity of period buildings. Where stone is beyond repair, we replace it with hand-matched sandstone — chosen and dressed to blend with the original.

  • Conservation-grade, sympathetic restoration
  • Hand-matched replacement sandstone
  • Colour and texture matched to the original
  • Cornices, lintels, cills and carved detail
04 — Stone Cleaning

Gentle, Effective Stone Cleaning

Years of soot, traffic pollution, algae and biological growth dull even the finest sandstone. We clean with methods that lift grime without abrasive blasting or harsh chemicals that damage the stone surface — leaving it sound and looking its best.

  • Soot, carbon and pollution staining removed
  • Algae, moss and lichen treatment
  • Paint and graffiti removal
  • Safe for soft Scottish sandstone

Sandstone Restoration FAQs

How much does sandstone restoration cost in Edinburgh or Fife?

Every building is different, so we provide a free survey and a fixed written quote. Cleaning a single façade costs far less than full repointing or stone replacement — we'll always recommend only the work your stone genuinely needs.

Will restoration damage my traditional or listed building?

No. We use conservation-approved, breathable methods — low-pressure steam cleaning and lime mortars — that are safe for soft Scottish sandstone and suitable for listed and conservation-area properties.

Can you match my existing sandstone?

Yes. We source geology- and colour-matched replacement stone and blend repairs so they're virtually invisible once weathered in.

Do I need listed building or planning consent?

Sometimes — particularly for listed buildings. We're experienced with the process and can advise on what's needed and liaise with your local authority where required.

How long will the work take?

A single façade clean may take a few days; full restoration of a tenement can take several weeks. Your quote includes a clear timescale before we begin.

Not sure what your stone needs?

Book a free survey and we'll tell you honestly — cleaning, repair, repointing or nothing at all. Covering Edinburgh, Fife, Dundee & Perth.
